I remember having this debate with my friend Brian when I
was in grad school: Would you take a drug that would make you a better writer
even if you know that it could risk your long-term health? He said “no,” adding
that he wouldn’t make such a Faustian bargain. I said (and still believe) that
I think I would if the drug made me a world-class (i.e. Nobel Prize contending)
novelist. Today’s New York Times has
